ON THE STREETS OF BALI
Public Telephones use either Cards or RP500 coins. You can also purchase telephone cards at many Souvenir, film or Pulsa (recharge telephone) shops.
Sometimes the street sellers can be bothersome, so unless you are interested the best thing to do is ignore them or just say no with a smile and keep walking. It is impolite to lose your temper, shout or be aggressive. Being polite is always appreciated and is a sign of sophistication and education in all of Indonesia’s many cultures.
Most good restaurants have Western style toilets; a good alternative if you are uncomfortable with the local toilet “Kamar Kecil†is McDonalds who have famously clean toilets all over the world.
POLITE CONVERSATION
Indonesians tend to be inquisitive people as this is a good way to introduce them selves. Don’t be offended by this as they may be only practicing their language skills and besides, this is how they meet people in their own language and culture.
Where are you going? Mau ke mana?
Where do you come from?Dari Mana?
How are you?Apa Khabar?
These are the top three questions that any Indonesian will ask. In most western cultures this would be a little too private perhaps but here in Indonesia it is a polite way of saying “hello†or “how do you do
Other good topics are food, climate and the beauty of Bali. Balinese are very friendly people who enjoy sharing their culture & tradition. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and always with a smile.
GESTURES
It is impolite to point with one finger. The best way to attract attention is waiving your whole hand with the palm facing down. Try to avoid standing with your hands on your hips as it may be mistaken for anger and never touch any one on their head as it is considered sacred.
SHOPPING
Bargaining can be fun and is totally acceptable where no prices are indicated. Generally prices are quite reasonable. Look around for good deals and compare prices before you rush in to avoid disappointment. Always at least try to aim for 50% of the asking price. If you are uncomfortable bargaining we can help you with a more personalized shopping experience.
TRAVELING AROUND
It is a good idea to take our “Life-saver†with you that has a small map and your address. A photo copy of your passport can come in handy for larger purchases and emergencies.
Wear a sarong, long pants with a sash or long skirt and remove your shoes when visiting a Hindu Temple. Be aware that you may not enter a temple during menstruation and try not to disturb people who are meditating. Smiling helps.
HOLIDAYS
For many Indonesians Bali means “BAnyak LIbur†which jokingly translates as “Many Holidaysâ€
Don’t be surprised to see cultural ceremonies every day of the week in many places in Bali. You are welcome to join in the full moon ceremony in every village temple staged every month. One of the most pleasant times to be in Bali is during “Nyepi†Balinese New Year. There are plenty of ceremonies prior to Nyepi and Ogoh Ogah is one of the most spectacular.
Sejuk Suites staff can advise you where and when there are ceremonies during your stay.
KEEP BALI BEAUTIFUL
Please help us keep Bali beautiful by not littering the streets and help us to conserve water & energy whenever possible.
Try to remember to switch of the AC and lights before you go out in the morning. Ms ?? will switch it on again for you before you come home.
THINGS TO SAY
“Selamat Pagi†means “Good Morningâ€
A very tiny list of the most important phrases to assist you whilst in Bali is on your “Life-Saverâ€. Most Indonesians can speak a little English and always willing to help but at least making an attempt at using a phrase will make people help you more than you can imagine.

BALI’S CULTURAL LOCATIONS
Nusa Dua Beach:
The Nusa Dua tourist resort is part of the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali. Some of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels are found here. The resort is known for its clean white beaches and clean waters.
The implementation of Balinese traditional philosophy and international health and environmental preservation standard makes Nusa Dua one of the very few modern resorts with traditional, cultural touches for leisure and business purposes. It is also a good place for water sports.
Kuta Beach:
The Kuta area is an international village. The long white sandy beach, the big waves, many accommodations, close to the airport, night life and all that make Kuta one of the most popular resorts in particular for the younger generation. Kuta beach is recommended for sunset viewing.
Batubulan:
Driving northeast from Denpasar, stone figures on the roadside marks the village of Batubulan. Divinities and demands are carved from sandstone for ornaments of houses and temples. Visit workshops to watch artists at work.
Batuan:
An old and famous center of the arts, it is now known for its dancing, wood panel carving and paintings.
Celuk:
Northeast of Denpasar, the village of Celuk is noted for its silver and gold works of jewelry in many styles and prices.
Mas:
This is the village of wood-carvers; many of Bali's old masters still live here. Art galleries exhibit some of their best works.
Visitors can wander through the Balinese style houses to view the carved wooden pillars and the artist at work or instructing apprentices who work in groups.
Ubud Village:
This is the center of Balinese painting. There are also several art galleries and the homes of some of Bali’s more famous artists are here.
Ubud has hundreds of hotels and home stays, located on a higher altitude with a pleasant climate and rice terrace field views.
Goa Gajah:
Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century and is believed to have been built as a monastery. The carvings on the wall show a demon head over the entrance, flanked by two statues.
The cave contains a statue of Ganesha. Excavations have uncovered a bathing place with six statues of nymphs holding waterspouts.
Tampak Siring:
The temple of Pura Tirta Empul is built around the sacred spring at Tampak Siring. Over 1000 years old, the temple and its two bathing places have been used people for good health and prosperity because of the spring water's curative powers. Regular ceremonies are held for purification.
Kintamani Volcano:
The villages of Kintamani and Penelokan give a view of Mount Batur and its Crater Lake. The caldera of Batur is truly impressive; 7 miles in diameter and over 60 feet deep.
From Penelokan, a road leads to Kedisan on the shores of the lake where boats can be hired to cross over to Trunyan.
Trunyan:
People who call themselves “Bali Aga†or original Balinese who have maintained many of their old ways inhabit Trunyan ancient village. The Puser Jagad Temple has an unusual architecture and stands under a massive Banyan tree.
Besakih Temple:
Known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" the sanctuary of Besakih is on the slopes of Mt. Agung it is the biggest and holiest of all Balinese temples. Over a thousand years old, steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings.
Around the three main temples dedicated to the Trinity Shiva, Brahma and Wisnu are 18 separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups. To the Balinese, a visit to the temple sanctuaries is a very special pilgrimage and many walk the entire journey from all over the island.
Alas Kedaton:
Well known as the "Holy Forest" this is a small forest measuring about 12 hectares. In this forest is an old temple and to the southeast of the temple is a small field called the Monkey Cemetery.
There are hundreds of monkeys in this forest and high up on the big trees many giant fruit bats are hanging and singing with their loud voices.
Tanah Lot Temple:
Tanah Lot was carved out of the landscape by tides, wind and rain to create the high off shore sentinel rock of Tanah Lot.
The rock cliff supports a small picturesque sea temple, which can be reached by a scramble over the wet rocks. Built by one of the last priest to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century, it’s rituals includes the paying of homage to the guardian spirits of the sea.
The best time to see Tanah Lot Temple is in the late afternoon when the temple is in silhouette with Fantastic sunsets.
Bedugul:
In the eastern highlands of Bali is the serene mountain area of Bedugul, where vegetable, fruits and flowers thrive in the alpine climate and a colorful little market at Candikuning.
The famous organic market offers a wide selection of produce including exotic strawberries, here there are also many hotels and restaurants and a beautiful botanical garden.
Gitgit Waterfall:
It is located in the village of Gitgit, 11 kilometers south of Singaraja. Follow the foot path to the site of the waterfall with of distance of 800 meters. The coffee and clove plantation adds scenic beauty to this area.
Lovina Beach:
Lovina is a more peaceful and restful tourist resort on the north coast of Bali and quite close to Singaraja. A beautiful beach backed by coconut groves.
Added attractions are the native pink dolphins in their natural habitat; you can swim with them along from Lovina beach. Early in the morning the local fisherman head out to sea in their colorful boats which can also be rented for the day.Â
